Phantom Pulse Calculator

CTH:YAG Phantom Pulse Calculator

Estimate the phantom pulse parameters required to maintain the thermal loading associated with the optimum CTH:YAG laser operating condition.

Laser Parameters

Phantom pulse energy is estimated from MegaWatt Lasers CTH:YAG 4 × 125 mm standard-test voltage and pump-energy data. Intermediate voltages are determined by interpolation.
Calibration & Extrapolation Caveat
The voltage-to-pump-energy relationship used by this calculator is based on MegaWatt Lasers CTH:YAG 4 × 125 mm standard-test data. Pulse-width calculations outside the directly measured standard-test range are extrapolations and should be treated as engineering estimates. In particular, short phantom pulses substantially below the measured test pulse widths may not follow the same energy-versus-pulse-width relationship exactly because actual flashlamp discharge behavior depends on the laser driver, flashlamp impedance, capacitor bank, inductance, pulse-forming network, cooling conditions, and other system parameters. Calculated phantom-pulse settings should therefore be used as a starting point and experimentally verified before use.

Laser and Phantom Pulse Timing

One laser repetition period is shown. Pulse spacing is based on repetition rate. Pulse widths are displayed using a compressed visual scale so that microsecond pulses remain visible.

Pulse spacing is shown using the actual repetition-rate relationship. Pulse widths use a compressed visual scale because microsecond pulses would otherwise be too narrow to see relative to a millisecond-scale repetition period.
Engineering note: This calculator estimates the phantom pulse conditions required to reproduce the average pump loading associated with the resonator’s selected optimum operating point. Actual optimum settings may differ because thermal lensing, flashlamp coupling, rod cooling, resonator alignment, and electrical discharge characteristics vary between systems.
